Reward Jumps to $37K in Long Murder

The reward for information leading to an arrest in the murder of a young architect last Sunday has jumped to $37,000.

The Citizens Crime Commission on Friday chipped in an additional $7,000 to the reward being offered for the arrest and conviction of the men responsible for killing Amber Long.

Long, a 26-year-old architect, was walking with her mother Stephanie along the 900 block of Front Street in the Northern Liberties section of the city around 10:35 p.m. on Sunday when they had their purses snatched by two men.

The man who grabbed Amber's purse then pulled out a handgun and shot her, point-blank, in the chest. She was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital where she died.

The woman and her mom had just gotten off the Market-Frankford El and were walking towards their car, which was parked on the street when the shooting occurred.

Nearly a week after the murder, no one has been arrested and the investigation is on-going. Earlier this week, homicide detectives released surveillance video from the scene to show Amber didn't put up a struggle when the purse was grabbed.

The city was has been offering $20,000 and the Fraternal Order of Police $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the two men responsible for the robbery and murder. The crime commission's cash brings the total up to $37,000.

Anyone with information is asked to call Philadelphia Police's tipline at 215.686.TIPS.

Parents Camp Out in Cold for School Registration

While many people spent this morning bundled up under the covers indoors, several hopeful parents spent theirs outside in the bitter cold. The parents camped out in their cars in front of the School Lane Charter School on the 2400 block of Bristol Pike in Bensalem.

While registration for the 2014-2015 school year began at 9 a.m., the parents arrived at the school hours earlier in order to ensure a spot for their children.

“We are cold and I’m trying not to use too much gas and I’m trying not to use too much battery,” said Jennifer Enoch, who arrived outside the school at 3 a.m. “Occasionally we turn the car on and then we’ll just turn it off and bundle up here.”

Despite dealing with temperatures ranging from the teens to low 20’s, Enoch didn't regret her decision.

“It’s worth it,” she said.

School Lane first opened in 1998, becoming the first charter school in Bucks County and the first suburban K-8 charter school in Pennsylvania. School Lane also opened a high school in August of 2012.

Sunoco Demolition Startles Nearby Residents

An implosion at a local refinery startled residents Saturday morning.

The Sunoco Eagle Point Facility in West Deptford, New Jersey conducted a controlled implosion of its fractionator, one tower and one chimney around 9 a.m.

Built in 1949 and standing around 200 feet, the fractionator was used to convert crude oil into other fuels. Its demolition is part of Sunoco's efforts to decommission the site as a refinery, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Startled by the demolition, which lasted about two minutes, viewers reached out to NBC10, with one asking if the loud booming noises were caused by an earthquake.

Before Saturday’s demolition, some West Deptford residents expressed concerns that the implosion would cause asbestos exposure. Officials say however that the town’s Construction Code Official as well as Fire Marshal conducted inspections and issued permits to allow the demolition to occur.

According to town officials, the site was deemed safe for implosion.

“Part of that permitting process is to remediate the proposed site for the implosion of all asbestos material before any demolition can take place,” wrote West Deptford officials in a released statement. “That remediation work was performed by Sunoco through NCM Demolition & Remediation LP and was monitored by Accredited Environmental Technologies Inc, which is an approved OSHA Monitor. The remediation work was completed and both officials certify that no public health concern is present with this demolition.”

Snow Wreaks Havoc

A light snowfall Saturday coupled with the already accumulated snow from earlier storms are causing problems for travelers throughout the region.

Icy conditions caused several crashes involving at least five vehicles on the Route 1 Media Bypass, according to officials.

The accidents forced authorities to shut down southbound lanes of the roadway between Meetinghouse Lane and Route 476 for more than an hour.

Officials reduced speed on the New Jersey Turnpike to 45 mph in both directions between the Delaware Memorial Bridge and exit 8 to Route 33 due to poor road conditions.

Slippery roadways also caused several crashes in Ridley Township, Delaware County and in Lower Merion, Montgomery county, according to a PennDOT spokesman.

There are 225 PennDOT vehicles on the road working to remove the accidents and alleviate the poor road conditions.

The snow also caused the FAA to issue a ground delay of up to two hours and 11 minutes, according to authorities at the Philadelphia International Airport.

Local Athletes Head to Olympics

Olympians from around the world are arriving in Sochi ahead of the games.  But some local athletes are wondering if the people who supported them the most - their families - will be cheering them on in-person as the financial burden could be too large of a hurdle to overcome.

“It is a little bit overwhelming just for my family,” said Chris Creveling, a short track speedskater competing in his first Olympic games. “For me, it is not a distraction.”

Creveling, who is from Kintersville, Bucks County, was named to the Olympic team on Jan. 5, giving his family just a few short weeks to make travel arrangements.

Family and friends in Frenchtown, N.J. sprung into action. A fundraiser is being held at the Frenchtown Roller Rink, which Creveling’s aunt owns, located at 2998 Highway 29, Frenchtown.

“Of course one of the easiest things for me to help with is to provide the rink,” his aunt, Kay Pinkerton, said. “It was friends that really stepped up to the plate and helped out.”

Pinkerton says one friend is preparing chicken pot pies and selling them for $10 each and TeamCrev t-shirts and magnets will be available.

“I think it is a challenge for everybody,” said Kyle Tress, who grew up in Lambertville, N.J. and will represent the U.S. in skeleton.

Tress credits his family and friends, especially his mother, for helping him reach the games.

“Friends and family donated money so I could buy my first sled and my first couple of runners,” he said.

The sled alone can cost as much as $5,000, he said.

Like Creveling, speedskater and Lehigh Valley native Kyle Carr used more traditional fundraising methods like selling t-shirts.

“I’m so pumped from all the support I got from the community,” Carr said.

But the travel costs, even more costly due to the limited lead time before the Olympics and inflated pricing during the Games, led both local athletes to turn to the 21st century financing model – crowdfunding.

The funds raised will help their immediate family watch as they go for the gold in Sochi.

“My friends and family have been huge for me,” Crevling said. “they are the reason why TeamCrev started. I’m not just representing myself and my country, I’m going there to represent TeamCrev.”

Carr says he also owes a lot to his hometown. “The community is a huge reason why I can afford to skate,” he said.

Gas Fumes Trigger Evacuation

A gas leak forces more than a dozen Philadelphia residents from their homes Saturday.

Fumes were detected inside a home on the 3300 block of I Street in the city's Kensington neighborhood, according to officials.

The main pipe that runs along the street cracked, according to a Philadelphia Gas Works spokeswoman.

The leak caused authorities to evacuate five houses on the block, displacing 15 people while crews work to fix the problem.

Stuck outside in the cold, one family of three decided to sit it out on a SEPTA bus.

The Salvation Army is assisting the residents while they wait to return to their homes.

PGW officials are unsure what caused the pipe to crack.

Soldier Reunited with Daughter

A girl was cheering on the basketball team in South Jersey Saturday when her coaches called her to the middle of the court.

"I didn't know what was going on," said Maia Heath, a sophome and cheerleader at Holy Cross High School in Delran, N.J.

After spending the last 2 1/2 years overseas, her father - a colonel in the U.S. Army - walked through the gym doors before breaking into a run to meet his 15-year-old daughter at mid-court.

Jerome Heath, who is also a detective with the Camden County Police Department, says the suspense leading up to his return was difficult.

"Even the last few seconds," Heath said. "Seeing her out there and not being able to go out there and grab her."

Heath had been stationed in Pakistan since 2011, missing many important milestones, including his oldest daughter's graduation from Wake Forest University.

"It is a big void in your life that you'll never be able to capture again," he said. "There's no opportunity in the world for me to reclaim that time."

Twenty-three-year-old Tesia lives in North Carolina and was unable to return home to see her Dad Saturday. But her mother, Tyneta, says she is thrilled her father is home.

The teary reunion elicited applause from the spectators and teams.

"The moments that we share right now will be everlasting," Heath said.

Airport Crews Battle Mother Nature

0
0

A snowy and bitter cold start to 2014 has left many travelers frustrated with flight cancellations and delays at Philadelphia International Airport.

About 100 flights were canceled Saturday after snowfall caused poor visibility, according to an airport spokeswoman.

Several airlines were still experiencing delays ranging from 15 minutes to five hours throughout the evening. The Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stop that lasted for more than two hours earlier in the day.

"I would much rather have aircraft delays, than potentially an unsafe situation,"said Keith Brune, deputy director of Aviation for Operations and Facilities.

Individual airlines determines flight cancellations.

Airport officials expect operations to return to normal by Sunday morning since crews spent the day working to remove snow from runways and deice planes.

"We have to get out there and remove snow very quickly and efficiently," said Brune, who added that his crews must complete the work while dodging aircrafts. "It's high pressure, there's no doubt about that."

No more than a half-inch of snow is allowed on runways, so a team made up of 65 employees use airfield plows to clear the tarmacs.

Measuring 19-feet across, the plows are much bigger than what is used to clear highways and local streets, Brune said.

Airfield crews can't drop traditional rock salt on runways because it is highly corrosive to planes. Instead a potassium acetate, a deicing chemical, is used.

Before planes can take off, they must be cleared of snow and ice.

"A lot of times they will apply a type-4 anti-icing, which then protects the wings so nothing will form and bond on the wing," he added.

The workers are prepared to work 24 hours a day, but some delays are still possible.

Officials advise travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and also urge people to use caution while driving to pick up or drop off passengers.

Residents in a South Jersey town are dealing with a major gas leak Saturday night.

Officials confirm a snow plow truck struck a gas service meter on the 800 block of Delsea Drive in Glassboro, Gloucester County around 11 p.m.

The crash caused the leak, but it is unclear if any evacuations took place.
