A tropical storm that poured rain along the East Coast in the South weakened Sunday morning to a tropical depression as it traveled north.

The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory at 8 a.m. Sunday that Tropical Storm Bonnie weakened to a depression near the coast of the Carolinas.

The storm was expected to make landfall Sunday morning. The National Hurricane Center advisory said much of the Carolinas and coastal Georgia continued to see heavy rain Sunday morning, even as the storm weakened.

All tropical storm warnings and coastal watches and warnings issued in connection with Tropical Depression Bonnie were discontinued.

Bonnie continued to move north at about 9 mph with maximum sustained winds at 35 mph.

The storm could bring rip currents to the Jersey Shore as it moves north. A National Weather Service statement issued early Sunday warned ocean swimmers to stay within sight of lifeguards on New Jersey beaches.

The tropical depression is expected to bring bouts of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms to the Delaware Valley and Jersey Shore in time for Memorial Day.

Arson Won't Stop Montco HS Band from Marching on Memorial Day

A Montgomery County high school band whose instruments fell victim to arson last week will still march and play in the local Memorial Day parade on Monday.

North Penn High School's band equipment suffered water and smoke damage after authorities say a student set a fire in the band storage area on Tuesday, forcing firefighters to evacuate about 3,000 students, faculty and staff from the Lansdale high school.

But the fire damaging the band's instruments won't stop them from playing in Lansdale's Memorial Day Parade after all: Band Director Mike Britcher said North Penn's Marching Knights will use instruments lent from two other area schools -- West Chester University and Spring-Ford Area High School -- that stepped up to help before the smoke cleared.

"We received more than a dozen offers for help," Britcher told NBC10 on Sunday. "It's incredibly satisfying to see that kind of support. Within an hour of the news showing the fire, we began receiving calls, [and] we were able to take two schools up on their offers."

The parade is set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Cannon Avenue and Main Street in Lansdale. It's one of Montgomery County's biggest Memorial Day celebrations, according to Lansdale officials, and the North Penn Marching Knights have been playing in the parade for more than two decades.

Britcher said that some 200 instruments in the band room where the fire started sustained water and smoke damage. He said they're not sure yet what the level of damage to the instruments is, because the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police on Friday said that a North Penn student was arrested in connection with the suspected arson and charged with multiple felonies. That student, who has not been identified because he or she is charged as a juvenile, remained at the Montgomery County Youth Center last week awaiting further court proceedings.

It's unclear why or how the student set the fire.

School officials said the fire caused significant damage that will be costly to repair.

Britcher said despite the setback, the Marching Knights are excited to come together to honor the community and veterans during the Memorial Day parade.

"I tell them all the time, this is a big thing for them, it's a different type of performance," Britcher said. "We have performances that are just for us and then we have performances for others, and to provide those services is the biggest thing they can do. They are really looking forward to it."

Armed Robbers Steal Xbox, Pistol-Whip Man in Violent Home Invasion

A trio of armed robbers burst into a home in Philadelphia's West Oak Lane neighborhood early Saturday morning and pistol-whipped a man, then took off with an Xbox and several hundred dollars cash.

Police on Sunday continued to search for the men -- one of whom they said they had identified -- responsible for the home invasion.

The victim, a 49-year-old man, said that he was asleep inside a home on 17th Street near 66th Avenue just after 5 a.m. Saturday when someone hit him in the head. He jolted awake to a terrifying scene, police said: three men standing around his bed, all pointing guns at him.

Police said one of the men then demanded, "Where's the money at?" while another rifled through the man's dresser drawers and took $600 cash. The men then stole a suitcase and packed an Xbox game system, games, a cellphone and a laptop into it.

But that wasn't enough for the robbers: Police said they continued to demand that the victim give up more money, before one of them pistol-whipped the man in the face, splitting his chin open.

The men finally fled from the house in an unknown direction, according to police. The victim called 9-1-1, and police responded and took him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he received three stitches to close the gash on his chin where the gun hit him.

Northwest Detectives continue to investigate the violent home invasion, and police said Sunday that they identified one suspect. Police described the two unidentified suspects as a black man between 18 and 20, about 6 feet 2 and weighing 200 pounds who has a dark complexion and "patches or bumps around nose/eyes." That man wore a black rain jacket with blue stitches in the front zipped up above his chin with his hood up. Police described the other man as a black man between 18 and 20 about 5 feet 4 and 125 pounds with a medium complexion. That man wore a gray hooded sweat jacket with the hood up and pulled tightly around his face, police said.

Tipsters should contact Northwest Detectives at 215-686-3353 or text a tip to PPD TIP (773847).

Runners Support SEPTA Officer Who Survived Hit-and-Run

A group of runners spent the holiday weekend showing their support for a SEPTA officer who was injured during a hit-and-run crash while jogging last week.

SEPTA Officer Gary Miller, 44, was jogging on the 7600 block of Rowland Avenue back on May 22 when he was struck from behind by a Saturn sedan traveling south on the 7600 block of Rowland Avenue. The impact caused Miller to strike the windshield of the vehicle before landing on the road. Police say the driver did not stop and continued south on Rowland Avenue, then east on Oakmont Street.

Miller was critically injured in the crash.

On Sunday at 3 p.m. a group of two dozen runners gathered at the same intersection where Miller was struck and ran for four miles in the sweltering heat. They ended their run at an area near Aria Torresdale Hospital where they were met by Officer Miller's wife, Clara Alicea Miller. The runners hugged her and gave her cards, posters and running sneakers.

“We’re all runners so we all sweat together,” said Jon Lyons who helped organize Sunday’s event. “Our muscles all burn together. We’re a strong community.”

Miller’s wife later sent photos to NBC10 showing her husband holding up the signs and letters.

[[381255681, C]]

“He’s still in a lot of pain,” she said. “But thank God I still have him.”

SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel told NBC10 Miller not only has the support of his fellow runners but also his coworkers as well.

“He’s a good guy,” Chief Nestel said. “He’s a solid guy. One of those people the entire department is rallying behind.”

Police continue to search for the hit-and-run driver. They say he was driving a late 1990s to 2000s dark-colored Saturn sedan with a shattered windshield, front end damage, a driver side front tire that is either missing a hub cap or a spare “donut” tire and a rear spoiler.

If you have any information on the incident, please call 911 immediately.

Memorial Day Weekend Ends With Heavy Rain, Storms

Sunny skies and warm weather gave way to heavy rain and cooler temperatures during Memorial Day Weekend.

Tropical Depression Bonnie moved into our area around 6 p.m. Sunday. While Bonnie weakened from a tropical storm to a tropical depression, it will still bring periods of heavy rainfall throughout the region heading into Monday morning. By the time the system moves out we could see up to two inches of rainfall in our region.

So far there are no threats of severe weather though we could see a Flash Flood Watch or Flash Flood Warning as Bonnie continues to move through.

In addition to the rain, temperatures will drop a bit Monday and we’ll see a high of 76.

After the rain moves out Monday, we’ll see a mixture of sun and clouds for the rest of the week until the rain returns Saturday.

Several towns canceled their Memorial Day Parades ahead of the rain.
