Dog Foils NJ Serial Burglar

An alert family dog stopped a burglar in his tracks when he tried to clear out the New Jersey homeowners' car parked in the driveway.

Hercules is a friendly dog, his owners in Nutley say, but he wasn't so friendly when he saw a burglar crawling in the window at 1 a.m. Tuesday.

"He was barking like we've never heard him barking before," said Stephanie Gencarelli.

Stephanie and Jarret Gencarelli were roused from their sleep, and they immediately knew something was "definitely wrong," according to Stephanie.

She went downstairs and saw the burglar in her driveway, rifling through her unlocked car.

"He even saw us through the windows. He didn't have a care in the world," Stephanie said.

Jarret heard the commotion and reached for his gun.

"I quickly grabbed a gun next to my bed, ran down the steps -- I actually saw the guy right in our driveway, followed him around my house," he said.

The burglar fled.

Neighbors of the Gencarellis say the same burglar targeted their homes that night. Fayrouz Shama said he tried to get into her home from the backyard.

"Everybody's scared. This is a quiet street," said another neighbor, John Evanzelou.

Police said the serial burglar slipped into yet another home through an unlocked window, ransacked the house and then stole the family's car -- all while the family slept. The stolen car was later found in Newark.

The suspect may also be connected to nine car break-ins, police said. He remains on the loose, but at this point police do not have an ID of the suspect.

Stephanie Gencarelli is grateful Hercules helped her avoid becoming a victim.

"If the dog didn't come down, this guy probably would have been inside the window," she said.

Still, police say, the incidents are a good reminder for neighbors to lock their doors and windows, even in a neighborhood that feels safe.

Free Toll on Ride to Shore

Maybe there is such a thing as a free ride.

Well, at least a free tollbooth.

Crab Fries-favorite Chickie’s & Pete’s is kicking off the "unofficial start of summer" by covering every driver’s toll at the Jersey Shore-bound Egg Harbor tolls along the Atlantic City Expressway from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday.

The #FreeTollFriday promotion by restaurant owner Pete Ciarrocchi has become a holiday tradition as the eatery with locations in Philadelphia, the suburbs and, of course, the Jersey Shore covers the $3 toll for an hour.

You will however still have to pay the tolls (and gas) on the way to your favorite Jersey Shore town but at least the one toll will be covered.

Safe driving on your way to the shore.

DelDOT Tips for Summer Travel

Drivers headed to the Delaware beaches will find the state is working hard to improve State Route 1, a major route to the shoreline. But with construction comes traffic, so the Delaware Department of Transportation has some advice for getting through it.

The "Making Strides to Improve Your Ride" campaign will have long-term benefits for drivers, including eliminating several traffic signals and three new overpasses. These benefits don't come without inconveniences, however-- three projects along SR 1 at Little Haven, South Frederica and Thompsonville Road were active construction zones.

On Friday evenings and weekends, DelDOT is suspending construction at the three points to keep traffic moving to and from the beaches. During the week, one lane in both directions is expected to remain open at all times.

DelDOT tells travelers to consider planning their drive times mid-week to avoid rush-hour traffic Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. On Saturdays, people should avoid traveling during 10 a.m. check-in and 2 p.m. check-out times.

Travelers can also download the DelDOT App on their smartphones to view traffic cameras, travel times, delays and advisories. Drivers can listen to DelDOT's Traffic Information Station WTMC 1380 AM.

If you need a break from driving, DART's Route 305-Beach Connection service operates during the weekends and holidays starting Friday May 27 through Labor Day.

For more information on the project, go to the DelDOT project website.

Around 9:30 a.m., the turnpike warned motorists that roadway remained closed at Interchange 351 (Bensalem).

Drivers could take U.S. Route 1 south to State Route 132 east to U.S. Route 13 north to get back on the turnpike toward New Jersey.

No one suffered life-threatening injuries, said officials.

Mayborn USA is recalling 3.1 million Tommee Tippee Sippee spill-proof cups after nearly 70 children became ill drinking from moldy valves, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) said Friday.

Mold can develop on the removable, one-piece, white valve inside the cups when it remains wet or moist and is infrequently cleaned, according to the recall alert.

Mold ingestion can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and infections in people with compromised immune systems, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The Massachusetts-based Mayborn USA has received 3,066 reports of mold in the removable valve, including 68 reports of children experiencing diarrhea, vomiting or other symptoms associated with drinking from a cup with mold in the valve.

Five types of spill-proof Tommee Tippee Sippee cups all with a removable, one-piece white valve are involved in the recall: First Sips Transition cup, Trainer Sippee cup, Sippee cup (including Cute Quips), Sportee bottle and Insulated Swiggle/Sippee tumblers.

The plastic drinking cups have spill-proof tops, easy-grip sides with detachable handles and were sold in clear with colored lids and a variety of colors and character prints. Some of the cups include short phrases on the front of the cups including: “You Pour I’ll Fling,” or “Drink Drop Repeat.” The cups have a 7 to 10 oz. capacity and were sold for children ages 4 to 12 months.

The cup were made in China and sold at BuyBuy Baby, CVS, Giant, Kohl’s, Marco Baby, Marshalls, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Ross Stores, Target, Bealls Outlet, Walgreens and Wal-Mart and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Babyhaven.com, and Diapers.com from December 2014 through May 2016.

Consumers who bought the cups should stop using them and contact the company to receive a free replacement cup at www.tommeetippee.us or 877-248-6922.

Pastor Dies in Hit-&-Run After Delivering Sermon

Philadelphia Police searched for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a volunteer pastor after he dropped off a group following a church sermon he gave.

Someone flagged down officers along the 2100 block of Front Street, near Diamond Street, in North Philadelphia after someone struck a driver around 10 p.m. Thursday, said Philadelphia Police. Witnesses said the passing car dragged the man about 20 feet down the road before fleeing.

Medics rushed the 57-year-old man, identified by church members as "Pastor Ellie" Elieser Leon, to Temple University Hospital where he died early Friday from head trauma, said Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Leon had just dropped off residents at the Soldiers of the Lord Ministry on Front Street after the group attended a ministry session at Bajo la Uncion del Santo inc. in Germantown where the assistant pastor had preached a sermon. Leon was getting back into his 2002 Dodge Ram van after helping make sandwiches when he was struck, said friend Emanuel Colon. The crash did visible damage to Leon's white van.

Police believe a dark 1998 to 2002 Saab sedan struck the victim because they found thin chrome with "Saab" on it at the crash scene. The car should have damage to the passenger side rear-view mirror, passenger-side fender damage, a flat tire and possible windshield damage on the passenger side.

Anyone with information on the deadly wreck is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.

Pastor Teoilo Claudio remembered his friend "Pastor Nellie" as the type of man "who would give you the shirt off his back" and who volunteered much of his time.

"He comes in every day, he works with the boys, he brings the message of the word of God, he was trying to make sure that (the men) go straight," said Claudio.

A prayer service is planned at the church at 2904 Germantown Avenue for 7 p.m. Friday.

'Cardless ATMs' Coming to Region

Bank of America wants to help give you one less thing to lose, and make your wallet a bit less cumbersome in the process.

That's the word out of a Silicon Valley digital conference this week, with Bank of America announcing plans to roll out "cardless ATM technology" at 5,000 branches, including 13 locations in the Philadelphia region.

The bank will install technology that lets customers withdraw cash, make transfers, and check balances using their smart phone.

“Consumers are increasingly using their mobile devices to manage their daily lives, and we’re committed to delivering solutions that give them convenient and secure options when it comes to managing their money,” said Michelle Moore, head of digital banking at Bank of America. “Now in addition to using digital wallets for purchases, customers can use them to get cash at the ATM.”

The bank is the first to begin a broad rollout of cardless ATMs. For users, the experience goes like this:

- Identify cardless-enabled ATMs by the contactless symbol Universal_Contactless_Card_Symbol_svg.png near the card reader.

- When ready to perform a transaction, the customer will select their Bank of America debit card in their digital wallet and hold their device over the ATM’s contactless card reader to activate the ATM.

Bank of America customers can begin the experiment in June at the following locations:

- 650 ROCK HILL DR., BENSALEM, PA 19020

- 1050 WESTLAKES DR., BERWYN, PA 19312

Student Arrested for School Fire

A North Penn High School student has been arrested for allegedly setting a fire Tuesday inside the Montgomery County high school, forcing the evacuation of the entire building.

The unidentified suspect is being held at a county juvenile detention center, the school district said in a statement on its website Friday.

No one was hurt when fire broke out in the band storage area and some first-floor classrooms. But smoke spread quickly through most of the Lansdale school, forcing 3,000 students and all staff to flee.

While firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one section of the school, the district said the cost of the damage has yet to be assessed.

“It is very concerning that one of our students is involved and it is clear that like anywhere in society, we are not immune to the potential of such acts," North Penn Superintendent Curtis R. Dietrich said in the statement.

The fire began at North Penn High School on Valley Forge Road about 11:45 a.m.

Here's Why Doctors Are So Worried About the Superbug

$

The superbug gene found for the first time in the United States has health officials very worried, NBC News reported.

The gene, called mcr-1, was found in a woman from Pennsylvania who had a bad infection last month.

In her case, it was an E. coli bacteria. But scientists say this particular gene can turn up in any bacteria, including strains that are already hard to treat.

Public health experts have been warning about antibiotic resistance for years. More than 2 million people in the U.S. are infected by drug-resistant germs each year, and 23,000 die of their infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What the CDC fears is a return to the "pre-antibiotic era," when people died by the millions from infections such as pneumonia or strep throat, from infected cuts and scrapes and after childbirth.
